Sydney University

The historic sandstone campus of the University of Sydney, founded in 1850, was Australia's first university and is very intersting to visit.

Did You Know?

Glebe is the haunt of Peter Corris’s fictional detective, Cliff Hardy, who lived near the Wentworth Park dog racing track.

Sir Edmund Barton, Australia ’s first Prime Minister, was born in Glebe’s Hereford Street in 1849.

The Glebe was a land grant of 400 acres given by Governor Arthur Phillip to Reverend Richard Johnson, Chaplain of the First Fleet, in 1790. The term ‘glebe lands’ refers to land given to the church for its support. Johnson did little with the land and it soon became the domain of timber cutters and fishermen.
