Rottnest Island is located 18kms off the Western Australian coastline near Fremantle and is a 25 minute boat ride from Fremantle.
The island has been a popular holiday destination for over 50 years. Rottnest is one of the only places in the world where the Quokka can be found, this is largely due to the exclusion of predators. The island also has a small colony of New Zealand fur seals based at Cathedral Rocks and a colony of Australian Sea lions at Dyer Island nearby. The island is popular with school leavers during leavers week, where the island is closed off to the general public. Within the Thompson Bay foreshore there are numerous food outlets and cafes as well as a few clothing stores. There are few island residents with most workers commuting from the mainland. You can catch the ferry from Fremantle, Perth or Hillarys with many operators making daily trips.
There are numerous accommodation options for you to choose from while on Rottnest Island. Most accommodation options are within the Thompson Bay area with a comfortable lodge, hotel and villas all in the vicinity. Further out you have the choice of camping grounds, hostel and discount villas.
